Modes

Three loudspeaker sculptures interpret Michel Chion’s three listening modes. Causal listening is evoked by a speaker configured as a birdhouse. Semantic listening is suggested by four speakers arranged to send a message between them. Reduced listening is represented by a completely closed speaker enclosure with no cone. By examining these listening modes as physical objects entirely devoid of sound, we can see that each mode is dependent on its own context for its interpretation.
