A sound sculpture, part of the Incidental Speakers series

A loudspeaker enclosure with no cone is filled with liquid black ink, after Charles Ray’s Ink Box (1986). The ink represents the physical material of sound, making sound visible while maintaining its fluidity. At first glance the liquid is not perceived as a liquid. With time, its nature as an undulating substance is revealed as movements perturb the surface. Here I recontextualize the capacity of acousmatic sounds to occlude the source and cause of a sound.
